Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Tehachapi on November 21
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Tehachapi area early Friday, November 21, citing a system bringing wet snow and gusty winds to the surrounding mountains and passes.
- When: In effect until 10:00 a.m. PST Friday, November 21
- What: Wet snow with additional accumulations of up to about 3–4 inches in higher spots, with winds gusting as high as 35 mph
- Where: Piute Walker Basin and the Tehachapi area, including nearby mountain passes
- Main concern: Slick and potentially hazardous road conditions, especially on bridges, overpasses, and higher-elevation routes
Impacts for Tehachapi and Nearby Passes
The advisory covered the mountain areas around Tehachapi and the Piute Walker Basin, including travel corridors where light snow and slush can quickly create problems for drivers. The NWS cautioned that roads, and particularly bridges and overpasses, could become slick as snow accumulated on colder surfaces during the early morning hours.
Drivers using Highway 58 through Tehachapi Pass and surrounding routes were urged to allow extra time, slow down in any areas of falling snow, and watch for changing conditions.
What the NWS Recommended
In its statement, the NWS advised residents and travelers to be prepared for winter driving conditions during the advisory window. That included planning for:
- Possible slushy or snow-covered patches on mountain roads
- Lower visibility at times in falling snow or low clouds
- Gusty winds making driving more difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles
Advisory Expired by Late Morning
The Winter Weather Advisory expired on schedule at 10:00 a.m. PST, as the system moved through and conditions gradually improved. Even after the advisory ended, drivers were encouraged to stay alert for leftover slick spots and any lingering slush in shaded or higher elevations.
Staying Prepared for Future Systems
Winter weather systems like this are common for the Tehachapi region as colder storms begin to move across California. Having a plan for mountain travel, checking forecasts before heading over the pass, and keeping basic winter supplies in the car can make a big difference when advisories are issued.
Tehachapi Journal will continue to share key local weather alerts and recaps so residents can stay informed, especially when winter storms and travel advisories affect the area.
